The first rays of the morning sun touched the green tea gardens of Assam as twenty-four-year-old Riya Sharma hurried toward the railway station.
She adjusted her dupatta and checked the time on her phone.
“Not again,” she whispered.
The train would arrive in just three minutes.
Riya lived in a small town near Jorhat. She was studying to become a teacher and traveled to the city every day. Her dream was simple: to educate children in villages who could not afford good schools.
As she reached the platform, she noticed a crowd gathered near an elderly woman.
The old lady looked worried.
Her bags were heavy, and she seemed unable to carry them.
Before anyone else moved, a young man stepped forward.
“Don’t worry, Aunty,” he said. “I’ll help you.”
He lifted her luggage, found her seat, and even bought her a bottle of water.
The woman blessed him with a smile.
“May God always keep you happy, beta.”
The young man smiled politely.
Riya watched everything.
There was something special about him.
Not because he was handsome.
Not because he dressed well.
But because kindness came naturally to him.
She noticed him board the train and sit near a window.
For some reason, she could not stop thinking about him.
Over the next few weeks, Riya saw him almost every day.
Sometimes he read books.
Sometimes he worked on his laptop.
Sometimes he helped passengers with their luggage.
Yet he never tried to impress anyone.
He simply did good things quietly.
One rainy morning, fate finally brought them together.
As Riya rushed to board the train, her books slipped from her hands.
They scattered across the platform.
Embarrassed, she quickly bent down.
Before she could collect them, another pair of hands picked up a book.
She looked up.
It was the same young man.
“You dropped this.”
His smile was warm and genuine.
“Thank you,” Riya replied.
“I’m Arjun.”
“Riya.”
The train whistle blew.
Both laughed awkwardly.
And just like that, their story began.
Soon, they started sitting together during the journey.
At first, their conversations were short.
“Which book are you reading?”
“What do you study?”
“Where do you live?”
But every day, the conversations became longer.
Riya learned that Arjun worked as a software engineer in Guwahati.
He loved photography and dreamed of starting his own company someday.
Arjun learned that Riya wanted to become a teacher because her own village school had changed her life.
One day, while passing through endless green fields, Arjun asked,
“Why do you want to teach in villages when you could earn more in a city?”
Riya looked outside the window.
“When I was young, one teacher believed in me. If she hadn’t, I wouldn’t be here today. I want to do the same for other children.”
Arjun smiled.
“That’s beautiful.”
For the first time, Riya felt her cheeks turn red.
As months passed, friendship turned into something deeper.
Neither admitted it.
But both felt it.
Arjun found himself looking for Riya every morning.
If she wasn’t on the platform, his day felt incomplete.
Riya caught herself smiling whenever she saw a message from him.
She enjoyed hearing his laugh.
She loved how he listened carefully whenever she spoke.
During Durga Puja, Arjun sent her a photograph he had taken of a beautifully decorated pandal.
“Thought you would like this.”
Riya stared at the photo for several minutes.
Then she smiled.
She liked the photograph.
But she liked the sender even more.
One winter morning, something unexpected happened.
Riya stopped coming to the station.
One day passed.
Then two.
Then three.
Arjun became worried.
A week passed.
Still no sign of her.
He tried calling.
No answer.
He sent messages.
No reply.
For the first time, he realized how much she meant to him.
The train journeys felt empty.
The seat beside him remained vacant.
The laughter was gone.
The conversations were gone.
And somehow, the world seemed quieter.
Ten days later, Riya finally appeared on the platform.
Arjun almost ran toward her.
“Where were you?”
Riya looked surprised.
“My father was hospitalized.”
Arjun’s face softened.
“Is he okay?”
“Yes. He’s recovering now.”
Without thinking, Arjun took her hands.
“I was worried.”
For a moment, neither moved.
Neither spoke.
But in that silence, both understood something important.
Their feelings were no longer friendship.
A few weeks later, Arjun received difficult news.
His company was transferring him to Bengaluru.
The opportunity was excellent.
But it meant leaving Assam.
Leaving his family.
Leaving Riya.
The thought hurt more than he expected.
That evening, he sat alone by the Brahmaputra River.
The sunset painted the water gold.
He knew he had only two choices.
Leave without saying anything.
Or tell Riya the truth.
The next day, he asked her to meet him at a riverside park.
The winter breeze was gentle.
Children played nearby.
Birds flew across the orange sky.
Riya smiled when she saw him.
But her smile faded when she noticed his serious expression.
“What happened?”
Arjun took a deep breath.
“I’m being transferred.”
Riya’s heart sank.
“Where?”
“Bengaluru.”
The world suddenly felt very quiet.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Finally, Arjun looked into her eyes.
“Before I leave, there’s something I need to tell you.”
His voice trembled.
“Meeting you changed my life.”
Riya felt tears gathering in her eyes.
“I look for you every morning.”
He stepped closer.
“Your happiness matters to me more than my own.”
The tears rolled down her cheeks.
“And I think…”
He smiled softly.
“No. I know.”
“I love you, Riya.”
The words hung in the air.
The moment felt frozen.
For months, both had hidden their feelings.
Now everything was finally clear.
Riya wiped away her tears.
A smile appeared on her face.
“I was wondering how long you would take.”
Arjun blinked.
“What?”
She laughed through her tears.
“I love you too.”
A year later, their families gathered for a traditional Assamese wedding.
The venue was decorated with flowers and lights.
Music filled the air.
Friends and relatives celebrated with joy.
As Riya walked toward the mandap, she remembered the day she had dropped her books on the platform.
A small accident.
A simple act of kindness.
A chance meeting.
And now, it had become the greatest blessing of her life.
Arjun looked at her and smiled.
The same smile that had first caught her attention years ago.
This time, however, it belonged only to her.
Years later, they often traveled together on the same train route.
Whenever they passed that old station, they exchanged knowing smiles.
Because that station was more than a place.
It was where two strangers met.
Where friendship blossomed.
Where love patiently grew.
And where destiny quietly changed two lives forever.
As the train moved forward, Arjun held Riya’s hand.
Outside, the sun was setting over the tea gardens.
Inside, two hearts were exactly where they belonged.
The End ❤️
